Before you decide to stay in the Mt Buller Alpine Village, you should be aware that there are certain costs associated with visiting, staying and parking on the mountain. One of the biggest things we are asked is how to get to Mt Buller and, we’ll be honest, it’s not as straightforward coming to the snow as it is going to the beach. But it will all make sense once you arrive – so please don’t worry!
All resort entry, car parking and village transport services are operated by Mt Buller Resort Management Board (RMB). Requests for more information and bookings should be directed to 03 5777 6077 or the Mt Buller website, www.MtBuller.com.au.
Mt Buller is located within the Alpine National Park and, therefore, a resort entry fee is payable at the resort entry gate in Mirimbah. Overnight car parking fees also apply. Vehicle access is restricted into the Alpine Village itself during winter and no parking is available at the Alpine Retreat. The resort car parks are located 2-3km before the village at the top of the 16km long windy and often snowy Mt Buller Road. As you drive up the mountain and into the resort you will be directed to park in an overnight car park, from where you will need to take an Oversnow Taxi up to the village and the lodge. The good news is that once you arrive in resort everything is within walking distance and there is also a free shuttle bus service to take you around the village.
Everyone driving passed the resort entry gate in Mirimbah is required to carry snow chains in their vehicle, by law, to minimise the risk of accidents. The mountain road is often snowy and the overnight car parks are located above the snowline - which means you might need them to drive your car out of the car park and off the hill if it snows during your stay. It’s also a good idea to bring a shovel in the car, in case you need to dig your car out of deep snow, as well!
Driving in snowy and icy conditions can be dangerous! Please take all necessary precautions on your way to us and find more information about preparing your car and yourself for the journey through the following links:
If you do get into trouble on the Mt Buller road, these phone numbers will help:

Pre-booking your resort entry, overnight car parking and oversnow taxi through the Mt Buller website will save you money!
A number of operators offer a coach service from Melbourne to Mt Buller, more details of which can be found on the Mt Buller website.
Mt Buller’s local operator is Mansfield-Mt Buller Buslines, who operate a route service from Mansfield that meets up with the Vline service from Melbourne. They also operate a Ski Express service from Tullamarine Airport direct to Mt Buller and a number of other pick up options across Melbourne.
If you prefer not to drive up the Mt Buller mountain road, you do have the option to park at Mirimbah, where the resort entry gate is located. The car parks here are $8 per night but you will then need to take the bus from the Mirimbah store up the 16km mountain road to the Alpine Village. The bus can be booked on the MMBL website. Parking here does not require you to have snow chains, as it is too low for snow. Once you arrive in the village you can walk to the Alpine Retreat (about 200m) and do not require an oversnow taxi (although you can still take one from the bus stop, if you prefer).
The Mt Buller Alpine Village is located at the top of a 16km long windy, and often snowy and icy, mountain road. Please follow road rules and use care and discretion to ensure you make it up and down safely.
Be picked up in our 4/5 seater 4X4 vehicle from your door in Melbourne and dropped off outside our door in the Mt Buller village at a time to suit you, avoiding the need for taxis, buses or snow chains. Arrive in resort refreshed and ready to hit the slopes!

Surrounded by snowgums and spectacular views, the Mt Buller alpine village is located above the snowline at 1600m, giving direct access to the 300 hectares of skiable terrain that make up the ski resort.
Ski, snowboard, toboggan or simply play in the snow - the Mt Buller winter season provides opportunities for a unique holiday experience in a unique Australian environment when you ski Victoria.
With over 300 hectares of skiable terrain, there is something to appeal to all levels of skier and sbowboarder at Mt Buller. Ski slopes range from the wide beginner’s slopes of Bourke St and Burnt Hut Spur, to the challenge of black runs like Chamois and Men’s Downhill.
With 22 lifts, Mt Buller has the largest lift network in Victoria, including thirteen chairlifts, four T-bars, two rope tows and four magic carpets. The resort features two Terrain Parks for all skill levels and a dedicated snow grooming team to maintain their condition.
Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) is a private company that owns and operates Victoria's largest lifting network of 22 lifts, a thriving Ski & Snowboard School and childcare facility. They are the first Australian ski company to achieve the ISO 14001 standard for Environmental Management and are committed to the sustainable development of Mt Buller as the premier alpine resort in Australia.
Step outside our front door and enjoy the snow - whether you want to build a snowman, have a snowball fight or make a snow angel, it’s all right here. Mt Buller also offers plenty of snow play fun, with two toboggan parks, complete with their own snowmaking machines to keep the kids (and big kids!) happy all winter long.
The Mt Buller Village is situated picturesquely on the top of of the mountain at 1600m above sea level offering a huge range of bars and restaurants, from quick snacks to fine dining and a choice of nightlife options. Its also home to Breathtaker on High Alpine Spa Retreat, Australia’s highest day spa, and a range of off-piste activities from cinema, to retail therapy, rock climbing and trampolining at the new Buller Airzone. You could even take your own 10-dog sled team for a slide with Australian sleddog tours - the only place this is possible in Australia.
As is standard with hotel stays, our check in times are set to allow us enough time to clean your room properly. We only have a small staff at the Alpine Retreat Mt Buller and a lot of rooms to clean, especially on weekends, so please be patient with us. If your room is ready before 4pm, we will be happy to check you in, however we cannot guarantee this being the case, which is why we offer luggage storage facilities.
Due to the fact that most people are out of the lodge on the ski slopes during the afternoon, our reception is only open in the morning and in the evening. Should you require assistance between 12pm and 4pm, please ring the doorbell at reception to gain the attention of our office person, who can be seen through the window above reception. If no one is present, it is most likely that they are helping someone elsewhere in the building. You can also call the lodge phone during this time on 03 5777 6500 to speak to a staff member.
Office staff are able to check you into your room should it be clean and ready when you arrive during the afternoon, however, this is not guaranteed under any circumstances and you may be directed to leave your belongings in the luggage store until the reception reopens at 4pm.
Alpine Retreat Mt Buller has a small luggage storage area available for use on arrival and departure days at no extra charge so that our guests can make the most of another day at Mt Buller. This is located behind the main stairs, the first door on your left as you enter the Reception area. Please note that this area is not supervised and the Alpine Retreat Mt Buller can accept no liability for items left here. Valuables can be locked up on Reception during reception opening hours, but again, no liability is accepted.
Public toilets are available on level 2, left of reception, passed the stairs and luggage store and opposite the restaurant. Changing rooms, showers and toilets are also available in the pool if you have checked out of your room already.
All linen and towels are supplied in your room. This includes, bed sheets, bath towels and extra blankets for warmth. Pool towels are also available in the pool area.
Free WiFi is available in the public areas of the lodge. This is not available in guest rooms.
Off-Piste Bar at the Alpine Retreat Mt Buller hosts live music and events throughout the season. Please note that some rooms, especially balcony rooms and the Chamois Apartment, may be able to hear noise from the bar.
The bar is open during the following times:
from 4pm to 1am Monday to Friday,
from 12pm to 1am on Saturday
from 12pm to 11.30pm on Sunday
The Alpine Retreat Mt Buller is a relatively old lodge and, as such, some of the dividing walls are thin. We ask guests to be courteous of others and to keep noise to a minimum when in your room and when moving around the building, especially late at night. This is especially important when staying on the top floor in our mezzanine rooms. We are a family lodge and children may be sleeping.
The property is set over 4 floors and does NOT have a lift. There is no disabled access and paths may be snowy during winter. Most areas of the hotel are also accessed by steps due to the buildings situation on the side of a mountain.
Overnight car parks are located on the road about 2km before the village from where you will need to take an oversnow taxi up to the lodges. All vehicles parking in the village car parks are legally required to carry snow chains, as these areas are above the snow line. Snow chains can be hired in Mansfield or Mirimbah. Car parks where snow chains are not required are located at the bottom of the hill at the resort entry gate in Mirimbah or in Mansfield, from where you can take a bus up to the resort. This will drop you in the village centre, about 150m from the Alpine Retreat Mt Buller's front door.
Prices for car parking, resort entry and taxis can be found and pre-booked in the Getting Here section of the Mt Buller website.
The swimming pool at the Alpine Retreat Mt Buller is open from 2pm to 9pm. Please abide by all swimming pool rules. The swimming pool area is unsupervised and the Alpine Retreat Mt Buller can accept no liability for events occurring from its misuse. Pool towels are available for guests to use by the pool.
The Games Room is open from 8am to 11pm. Please leave this area neat and tidy and be considerate of other guests who may be staying in adjoining rooms with regards to making noise. No alcohol, food or drinks are to be consumed in this area.
The Alpine Retreat Reception is open from 8am to 12pm and from 4pm to 8pm.
If you are IN RESORT only and require assistance outside of these hours, please call the lodge mobile on 0439 776500.
At the time of booking you will be asked for your full name, a contact phone number and an email address to send your booking confirmation to.
